According to Mahabharata, Lord Krishna once asked Yashoda the reason for worshipping God Indra. Yashoda told that people worship God Indra to get enough rain for farming, feeding cows, or getting seeds from nurtured lands. Young Krishna opposed Yashoda Maa and advised the villagers to end worshipping God Indra, instead of it he requested them to worship the Govardhan mountain, as the mountain would help the villagers to bring sufficient rain. Lord Krishna stopped the customs to offer huge amounts of food to God Indra and further urged the villagers to utilize it for feeding their families.

following Lord Krishna, when the Brajvasis stopped worshiping Lord Indra and started worshiping Govardhan, angry with this, Lord Indra submerged the entire Braj with heavy rain to frighten the Brajvasis. When people were afraid of Indra's anger, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Mountain on his little finger for 7 days and broke Indra's Pride. Lord Krishna protected the people from heavy rain and all the villagers lived happily in his shadow. Then Lord Indra was very ashamed of this act and apologized to Lord Krishna. Indra urged Shri Krishna to always take care of his son Arjuna. This is why Shri Krishna supported Arjuna in every situation.
