Since she was bound by the words given to her husband Lakshman. She could not even cry in her husband's separation. Urmila additionally had the responsibility of serving the family and the three mothers. Everyone remembers Sita's renunciation and devotion towards her husband Ram, but Urmila's renunciation and sorrow are rarely discussed.

Dasharath was the King of Ayodhya and Ram was his elder son. Ram was supposed to get the throne after DasharathDasharatha's other wife Kaikeyi, brainwashed by her housekeeper Manthara, desired Ram to be banished for 14 years; she aspired her son 'Bharat' to become the King. She applied the boons that Dasharath had promised to her previously.

Dasharath needed to banish Ram for 14 years instead of crowning him the ruler of Ayodhya. Dasharath could not stop his son from going to the forest. Sita and Lakshman accompanied him to the forest.

On the very first night of exile, Ram and Sita rested in the forest. Lakshman watched out for them. He wanted to serve His dear brother and sister-in-law and thus needed to remain conscious and alert all throughout the period of exile. After a while, the sleeping goddess appeared to Lakshmana and asked Lakshmana to rest. After this Lakshman very politely requested to Nidra Devi that he is unable to rest for the following fourteen years since he has come to protect his elder brother and sister-in-law.

The goddess was impressed by his dedication and agreed to leave him for the next fourteen years. Goddess Nidra agreed but said another person should sleep on behalf of Lakshman to maintain the balance, to which he assigns his wife Urmila. Lakshman realized that Urmila would effortlessly accept duty. Nidra Devi at that point approached Urmila and started discussing Lakshmana’s condition. Urmila promptly agrees, letting Lakshman remain wakeful and serve his brother for 14 years without any tension and tiredness. In this way, Urmila followed her husband Dharma.

Urmila's dedication towards her husband shielded Lakshman from all the dangers. It is said about Urmila that because of her power only Lakshman could kill Meghnath. According to Ramayana, Meghnath had obtained a boon by doing austerity that he can be killed by the individual, who has not slept for a very long time.

When Urmila slept on behalf of Lakshman, he did not sleep for fourteen consecutive years. Thus, only Lakshman could kill Meghnath and when Rama and Ravana fought, Lakshman killed Meghnath. It is also because Lakshman vanquished sleep that he was able to slay Meghnath, Ravana's son, who had got a boon he could be killed only by someone who has defeated sleep.

Why Urmila become an Inspiration for Today's Women?

Women should learn self-discipline from Urmila. Urmila's asceticism is nothing less than a sacrifice. Urmila responsibly performed her duties as a daughter-in-law and spent the rest of her time praying to Lord Shiva for the safety of her husband. But, history had ignored her sacrifice. She never demanded her rights as well as a place in history.

Urmila’s sacrifice is considered to be bigger than Sita’s. We can learn the value of sacrifice from Urmila's life, the dedication towards our duties, and keeping morals in our responsibility.

The separation of Urmila gives Lakshman the message of liberation, not of bondage. Urmila's character as daughter, sister, wife, or mother will be paramount in this context. Her responsible behavior is inspiring us even today. Every woman should learn the moral code, discipline, and self-control from Urmila.
